Foods and Cooking Methods that Help Lower Cholesterol

It’s not tough to prepare dishes that could help lower cholesterol. All you have to know is which foods to avoid, which foods to take, and how to prepare them in such a way that they can reduce bad cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein or LDL is bad cholesterol. A high amount of LDL in the blood can accumulate and narrow the inner walls of arteries. Heart attack or stroke may occur if ever a clot forms and blocks the narrowed arteries.

Fortunately, it’s not too late to change and go healthy. It’s as simple as implementing simple changes in food choices and lifestyle. If you love full cream milk, try non-fat or low fat instead. If you can’t resist steak, at least go for leaner cuts containing less fat. Give up fast food and processed foods that have high levels of cholesterols and fats. And in time, you will be reducing cholesterol and lessening your risk of stroke and heart attack.

Oats and whole grains are known to help alleviate cholesterol. They are stuffed with fiber that helps get rid of bad cholesterol in the body. In fact, a study showed how people who eat the most whole grains had the thinnest carotid artery walls and the least progression in artery wall thickness. Also, a specific compound in blueberries known as pterostilbene can help lower cholesterol just as effectively as commercial drugs, but minus the nasty side effects.

Eating nuts could also help alleviate bad cholesterol. Nuts like walnuts, pistachios and almonds lower LDL levels and protect your heart. The antioxidants and Omega 3 fats found in nuts are known to reverse arterial damage brought about by saturated fats. These fatty acids fight off accumulation of cholesterol and fend off heart attacks and blood clots. Mackerel, herring, lake trout, salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, flaxseed, soybean and canola oil also contain Omega 3.

By Kate Kelland London - Only half of patients at high risk of heart disease are given the right targets for cutting their cholesterol and millions may suffer heart attack or stroke due to doctors' poor advice, scientists said on Thursday.

More heart-friendly foods are avocadoes, olives and olive oil. About 26 of the 30 grams of fat in an avocado are unsaturated fats that can increase HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol levels. Good fats in olives and olive oil help fight off heart disease. Pure cranberry-grape juice also helps ward off bad cholesterol. Antioxidants in grape juice delay LDL cholesterol oxidation while cranberry juice boosts HDL or good cholesterol.

In buying meats, go for leaner cuts. This is one step to reduce saturated fat in meat and poultry. When going for beef, choose lean cuts including round, chuck, sirloin or loin. For ground beef, opt for lean or extra lean. For pork, lean cuts are tenderloin or loin chop. For lamb, lean cuts are those coming from the leg, arm or loin. Avoid buying meats that are graded “prime”. Instead, buy “choice” or “select” grades.

Take the seafood route. Fish is low in saturated fat. When preparing fish dishes, go for baked, broiled, grilled or boiled instead of breaded and fried. You can also opt for meatless meals by incorporating vegetables and beans into the dishes. When going for poultry, eat chicken or turkey instead of duck and goose, which contain more fat. Just remember to remove skin from chicken or turkey since they are high in cholesterol.

Knowing which foods to indulge in and resist will surely help. And, now that you know some preparation techniques, you can still enjoy your favorite foods, cooked in a healthier way. It isn’t too late to change and attain a healthy lifestyle. By making a few changes in diet and cooking methods, you will surely lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease easily.
