Foods and Cooking Tips that Help Lower Cholesterol

It’s not tough to prepare dishes that could help lower cholesterol. All you have to know is which foods to avoid, which foods to take, and how to prepare them in such a way that they can reduce bad cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein or LDL is bad cholesterol. A high amount of LDL in the blood can accumulate and narrow the inner walls of arteries. Heart attack or stroke may occur if ever a clot forms and blocks the narrowed arteries.

It is not too late to go healthy and reduce cholesterol. By making a few changes in food choices and lifestyle, you can lessen your risks of heart attack and stroke. Avoid eating processed foods and fast foods that are rich in cholesterols and fats. Used to drinking full-cream milk? Go for non-fat or low fat milk instead. Love steak? Choose lean meats that contain less fat.

Reduce cholesterol by taking in more whole grains and oats. These are rich in fiber and help sweep out the bad cholesterol from your body. A certain five-year study showed that people who ate the most whole grains had the thinnest carotid artery walls and showed the slowest development in artery wall thickness. Pterostilbene, a compound in blueberries also helps lower cholesterol just as effectively as commercial drugs, minus the negative side effects.

Some nuts also help lower bad cholesterol. Pistachios, walnuts and almonds can help protect your heart and lower LDL levels. The antioxidants and Omega 3 fats in nuts function to reverse the arterial damage caused by saturated fats. Omega 3 fights off cholesterol build-up and prevents heart attacks and blood clots. Other foods that contain Omega 3 are mackerel, herring, lake trout, salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, flaxseed, soybean oil and canola oil.

*News* More heart-friendly foods are avocadoes, olives and olive oil. About 26 of the 30 grams of fat in an avocado are unsaturated fats that can increase HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol levels. Good fats in olives and olive oil help fight off heart disease. Pure cranberry-grape juice also helps ward off bad cholesterol. Antioxidants in grape juice delay LDL cholesterol oxidation while cranberry juice boosts HDL or good cholesterol.

In buying meats, go for leaner cuts. This is one step to reduce saturated fat in meat and poultry. When going for beef, choose lean cuts including round, chuck, sirloin or loin. For ground beef, opt for lean or extra lean. For pork, lean cuts are tenderloin or loin chop. For lamb, lean cuts are those coming from the leg, arm or loin. Avoid buying meats that are graded “prime”. Instead, buy “choice” or “select” grades.

Seafood is also a good option since fish is low in saturated fat. The key is in preparation. Rather than breaded and fried fish meals, go for baked, broiled, grilled or boiled. Using vegetables and beans as a main ingredient (instead of meat) is also recommended. Poultry-wise, eat chicken or turkey rather than duck or goose, which have more fat. Make sure to remove chicken or turkey skin since they are very rich in bad cholesterol.

Knowing which foods to indulge in and resist will surely help. And, now that you know some preparation techniques, you can still enjoy your favorite foods, cooked in a healthier way. It isn’t too late to change and attain a healthy lifestyle. By making a few changes in diet and cooking methods, you will surely lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease easily.
